Retail ID Is Changing Cannabis POS Workflows — Here’s How

Katharine Baxter • March 17, 2026

Accurate inventory tracking at the point of sale (POS) is becoming more crucial as retail cannabis operations and regulations grow more complex. Every product sold must be properly tracked between the point of sale (such as Dutchie, Treez, or Flowhub), the retailer’s inventory system, and the state’s track-and-trace platform—most commonly Metrc.

One of the key components of this process is
Retail ID, a unique identifier assigned to retail-ready cannabis products once they are converted from bulk inventory.

Understanding how Retail ID works—and how it connects with your cannabis POS—can help dispensaries reduce errors, speed up transactions, and maintain compliance. And with StashStock’s
automated labeling solution and Metrc integration, the process becomes even more efficient.

How Does Retail ID Work with Cannabis POS Systems

Unlike plant or package tags used earlier in the supply chain, Retail ID lives at the retail level, allowing dispensaries to track individual items as they move from inventory to checkout. Retail IDs typically appear as QR codes printed on product labels and scanned at the cannabis POS during final sale. This process not only enables seamless tracking, compliance, and recalls, but also allows customers an inside look at product data, quality, and lifecycle. Once products are prepared or received for retail sale:

  1. Retail ID Is Added to the Label: Each sellable unit receives a label that includes Retail ID QR code, which gives customers access to the origin, potency, test results, and Certificate of Analysis.

   2. Products Are Scanned into POS Inventory: Retail staff scan the Retail ID into the cannabis POS system, creating or validating inventory records. This step ensures accurate counts at the item level, syncing data between systems. This also creates a faster, more efficient checkout experience for customers.

   3. Retail ID Is Scanned at Checkout: At the time of sale, the cashier scans the product’s Retail ID. This action:

  • Removes the item from available inventory
  • Ties the sale to a specific unit
  • Supports accurate reporting and reconciliation

   4.  Customer Scans Retail ID for More Information: When customers leave the store with cannabis product, they now have access to real-time product data, lab results, and reviews via a single scan.

How StashStock Simplifies Retail ID

StashStock’s integration with Metrc goes beyond simple compliance. It automates Retail ID generation and ties it directly into your inventory management process—all without separate entry steps and extra labels. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

One-Step Label Creation: Instead of manually creating separate Retail ID codes and compliance labels, StashStock allows you to generate both at the same time on one label. This eliminates redundant steps, keeps your processes efficient, and reduces extra labels.

Scan-Ready Inventory: Once labels are printed and attached, products are ready for scanning into inventory and processing at the cannabis POS. That means less back-and-forth for staff and fewer mistakes at checkout.

Operational Efficiency: Automated Retail ID labeling reduces labor time and error potential, streamlining:

  • Inventory setup
  • POS integration
  • Reconciliation
  • Reporting workflows

Customer Transparency: Retail ID allows customers to view real-time data, share reviews, and verify lab results all with a single scan–without cluttering the label.
