Is Medical Marijuana (MMJ) legal in Louisiana?

Yes. While medical marijuana has been legalized in Louisiana for many years a bill signed in June of 2015 outlined the framework around dispensing cannabis to medical patients. In August of 2019, medical cannabis was dispensed for the first time in Louisiana.  


Is Recreational Cannabis legal in Louisiana?

No, recreational cannabis use is not legal in Louisiana. As of June 14, 2021, cannabis possession has been decriminalized for up to 14 grams punishable by fines up to $100.

Cultivation Tiers Defined:

As of June 2, 2022 the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) is responsible for the oversight of the medical cannabis program. Louisiana has a maximum license count of 10, where that number can only be exceeded with legislative approval. All licensees must submit their application to the Louisiana Department of Health. 


Restrictions:

Louisiana cannabis cultivation is currently only legal for medical use. In addition, licensed cultivators are the only people who can legally grow marijuana plants,  patients are not able to grow their own.

Package and Label Requirements

Cannabis labeling requirements for Louisiana can be found in HB 125 on page 4.


Packages are required to be child resistant and must contain health and safety warnings.  Package labels must also contain potency and activation time information.

Louisiana has been using the METRC system for track and trace since November of 2018. The METRC system is used from the immature state of a plant until it is destroyed or sold.


METRC provides its seed-to-sale system for end-to-end plant monitoring. METRC is responsible for the implementation of the technical and operational components of the statewide track and trace system.
